Some Social Security benefit recipients will get two payments next month.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays out billions in benefits every month to some 70 million Americans. In May 2025, the 7.4 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is for disabled and blind Americans with little to no income or assets, will be paid twice: once on May 1st, and again on May 30th.
Usually, SSI recipients are paid once a month on the 1st. But the payment date is sometimes brought forward when 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
“When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month,” the SSA said in a 2022 blog post. “That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.”
“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment. It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”
The SSA advises waiting three working days before contacting the agency if a payment hasn’t arrived as expected. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are not considered working days.
Social Security Payment Dates for May 2025
While SSI benefits are usually paid at the beginning of the month, other benefits, like retirement, survivor and spousal benefits, are distributed at different times, based on either the recipient’s birth date or the length of time they’ve been receiving payments.
In May, other recipients will be paid on the following dates:
- Friday, May 2: Retirement benefits for those who have been collecting checks since before May 1997 and retirees who also collect SSI benefits.
- Wednesday, May 14: Benefits for those born between the 1st and 10th of any calendar month.
- Wednesday, May 21: Benefits for those born between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, May 28: Benefits for those with birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
How Much Are SSI Benefits?
The maximum monthly SSI payment for 2025 is $967 for an individual and $1,450 for a couple. However, how much you get may be lower based on your income, certain family members’ income, your living situation, and other factors.
SSI is typically available to single people who earn no more than $2,019 per month from work and get less than $988 per month from non-work sources, like unemployment or pensions. The income limit is higher for couples and for parents applying for children.
