A Sydney restaurant has apologized after a customer posted an online review claiming she found a dead rat in her meal.
The woman alleged to have come across the dead animal while eating a katsu don set at Japanese restaurant Tatsuya West Ryde.
The customer, who posted a Google review under the name DO, said she found the rodent in her half-eaten side salad.
“I’d eaten half of it at this point. Just absolutely revolting and unacceptable,” she wrote.
“Everyone who was present at the time, stood up and left the restaurant.”
The woman’s friend, posting under JH, wrote in a one-star review that they did not “even think I should be giving a star considering what happened today”.
“My pregnant friend and I were having their lunch set today and in her small salad was a disgusting feral dead rat that was underneath the salad,” they wrote.
Both DO and JH criticized the restaurant for continuing to serve customers despite the grim find.
Daniel Kim, who wrote that he was DO’s husband, said: “My wife’s salad had a rat in it. Absolutely disgusting”.
Responding to Kim’s review, the restaurant said it “sincerely apologise(d) for this incident”.
“The issue originated from a delivered salad box which we are currently investigating with our supplier and local food authorities,” it said.
“We are taking all necessary steps to prevent such incidents and appreciate your understanding.”
Tatsuya’s owner told 9 News in a statement that an incident was under investigation.
“Google reviews are based on personal opinions, not verified facts,” they said.
“An incident did occur, and the cause is currently under investigation.
“We have responded to the incident appropriately and are continuing to follow up with additional measures.”
