Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder are loving their new life outside of Los Angeles.
“We walked away from our careers and acting,” Somerhalder, 46, said during a Thursday, April 24, episode of The Julia Cunningham Show on SiriusXM, regarding his and Reed’s choice to move their family to a farm outside of LA. The couple, who tied the knot in 2015, share daughter Bodhi, 7, and a 1-year-old son.
“He talks about walking away a lot. I don’t view [it] like a walk away,” Reed, 36, said. “I sort of view a nice transitional moment right now of figuring out how to really marry business with passion, with, you know, truly walking the walk.”
The Twilight star added, “You can talk about this stuff all you want, but if you don’t have your feet on the ground and you aren’t doing it in practice, then it’s hard to really be an expert in something you don’t know, and so that’s a real priority for me.”
Reed noted that she and Somerhalder, who also own The Absorption Company together, are “kind of like the yin and the yang in that he is unbelievable in his ability to use his voice and amplify a message and he’s all around the world doing this work, which is incredible.”
Along with the farm, the couple remains career focused. Somerhalder shared that he had taken “110 flights” in 2024, with Reed adding, “I’ve had to learn to really plant my feet in the ground so that he and I can balance that out. You know, you can’t run a farm if you’re not there.”
Despite removing themselves from Hollywood in proximity, they are still grateful for the platform their careers in entertainment have given them.
“I wouldn’t have a platform at all if it weren’t to use it for this,” Reed said. “I mean, I don’t see any point in having it, so you know, that’s from my business to my, you know, sort of ethos and all of it in between. That’s what I use all of it for, my company.”
Somerhalder said, “But the entertainment world really gave us these amazing platforms, so we’re super grateful for it.”
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in May 2024, Reed opened up about her daily routine on the farm, revealing, “I start my days at 5 [a.m.] and I usually finish them around midnight.” The couple grow “over 40 different types of fruits and vegetables” on their land. “It is really full on and full time,” Reed said.
In January 2024, Somerhalder confirmed he had quit acting. Speaking exclusively with Us in October last year, Reed said she did not want to be “lumped in” with Somerhalder’s statements that he had fully retired from Hollywood.
“Ian, at one point, made a very definitive statement. And I just want to say right here that I don’t want to be lumped in with his definitive statements,” Reed told Us at the 2024 Environmental Media Association Awards Gala. She added, “I feel like there are no doors that are ever closed. But it’s just not on the forefront of my mind right now. I’m running two companies.”
