The Washington Commanders had a tough Week 2, as they lost to the Green Bay Packers, 27-18. To make matters worse, the team is having to deal with some injuries.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a knee injury that required an MRI, and coach Dan Quinn is going to address that on Monday afternoon.
Running back Austin Ekeler also suffered an injury, and unfortunately, he will be out for the remainder of the season with a torn achilles.
With that, the Commanders had to bring in some running back help after trading Brian Robinson Jr. in the off-season, and they announced on Monday they were signing Chase Edmonds to the practice squad.
Edmonds is a veteran running back who has seven years of NFL experience.
He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals with the 134th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft after playing his college football at Fordham. He spent his first four seasons in Arizona, where he rushed for 1,551 yards and nine touchdowns.
He also showcased the ability to make plays catching the ball, as he had 128 catches for 921 yards and five touchdowns.
In 2022, he split time between the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins, once again showcasing the ability to make plays in both the run and passing game.
His last game action was in 2023 for the Buccaneers, when he appeared in 13 games and rushed for 176 yards.
The Commanders are going to have to go through this season with a running back by committee look. After two weeks, Jayden Daniels has the most carries with 18. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is leading the team with 99 yards on 14 carries, but he isn’t a real threat in the passing game. The Commanders currently have two other running backs on the depth chart in Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Edmonds isn’t going to come and take over for the Commanders, nor is he the player that a healthy Ekeler is. However, he is able to do many of things that he is, and he will give Daniels an option out of the backfield.
It the NFL, the motto is always next man up, as injuries are unfortunately a big part of the game. It doesn’t matter who or when, but every team at some point in the season is going to have to adjust on the fly to an injury.
Right now, Edmonds is currently just being signed to the practice squad, but there is a good chance he will be brought up to the active squad in the upcoming days.
