After recovering from a mid-season slump to seize a top record in the American League, the New York Yankees will face the rival Boston Red Sox in a highly anticipated wild card series.
The matchup promises to be another classic entry in one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports, with plenty of attention on the three-game set at Yankee Stadium. But for some of the players involved, the attention that comes with playing for one of these historic franchises can have some negatives.
When speaking out in a recent interview about his interactions with baseball fans all around the world, Yankees superstar Aaron Judge noted just how constant the attention is.
“I’ll be walking the dog or with my family and most of the time I’ll hear, ‘Good game’ or ‘Good luck,’” Judge told NJ.com’s Randy Miller. “It’s just that everybody has a phone with a camera in their pocket.”
Judge has become one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet thanks to his large frame and consistent Most Valuable Player Award production at the plate. And as the captain of the Yankees, he has largely accepted that non-stop attention in public will come with the territory.
However, there is still one type of fan behavior that raises his ire.
“But if I’m with my wife and I’ve got my daughter there, it’s a little different,” Judge added, per Miller. “I’ll say, ‘Hey, she’s not the right fielder for the New York Yankees. She’s not even a year old, let’s leave her out of the pictures and videos.’ That’s where I get a little irritated at times.”
As Judge and the Yankees prepare for yet another high-stakes matchup with the Red Sox, the captain will probably be avoiding many outings in public. But the next time they do see the superstar out with his family, perhaps fans can be a little more careful in collecting their keepsakes.
