The Dallas Cowboys are coming off an epic Week 4 showdown with the Green Bay Packers on “Sunday Night Football,” which ended in a 40-40 tie.
One major storyline that came from the game was first-year Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s controversial decision to bench former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. The move raised some eyebrows given Diggs’ impact on the field, despite some early-season struggles.
Diggs did play in the game and made a crucial defensive play late in the second half, reading a Packers screen in the red zone and forcing Green Bay behind the sticks, stalling its momentum.
On Friday, Schottenheimer spoke to reporters and explained his decision, shedding light on his relationship with Diggs heading into Week 5 against the New York Jets.
“He’s been awesome,” Schottenheimer said. “The conversation we had was interesting. I shared my opinion, he shared his opinion. We agreed to disagree on some things. But, man, just the way he’s responded, the way he played in that game fantastic player. I’ve been blown away by his work this week and how well he’s been doing. That’s what I love about him. I get mad at my kids all the time. And they still love me. And I still love Trevon.”

Diggs reportedly approached Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus with the suggestion that the defense should play more man-to-man coverage instead of relying heavily on playing zone. Schottenheimer also addressed that report on Friday.
“We don’t think that we have all the answers,” Schottenheimer added. “The guys that play the game are so important and so impactful that absolutely, I talk about scheme with all of our players a lot. I understand that. We’re trying to grow. We have not been playing great, but it’s not just because we’ve been playing zone defense.
“I would be really pissed off if our players felt something and didn’t come sit down with me and say, ‘Hey, Schotty, I think we should be doing this.’ Does that mean we’re gonna do it? No, not necessarily. But I’m gonna listen.”
