Donald Glover is revealing the real reason why he canceled his 2024 world tour.
“You guys voted for the ‘where have I been’ monologue, so I was doing this world tour, had lots of fun,” Glover, 42, said while performing under his Childish Gambino moniker at Tyler the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw on Saturday, November 22, per social media footage. “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital.”
When Glover saw the physician, he was promptly diagnosed with a stroke.
“The first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx,’” Glover quipped, referring to Foxx’s 2023 medical emergency that left the Oscar winner hospitalized and comatose with a stroke. “That’s really the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’ I know it’s not true.”
Glover announced in September 2024 that he needed to cancel the remainder of his New World Tour concert dates for an undisclosed reason related to his health.
“Hey everyone. Unfortunately, I have to postpone the rest of the North American tour to focus on my physical health for a few weeks,” he wrote via social media at the time, telling fans to “hold onto [their] tickets” for a postponed show. “All tickets will be honored for the upcoming dates in North America when they are rescheduled.”
He concluded, “Thanks for the privacy. Thanks for the support. Thanks for the love.”
As Glover privately recuperated from the stroke, his doctors advised him to undergo multiple medical procedures.
“They found a hole in my heart, so I had this surgery,” he said on Saturday. “Then I had to have another surgery. You know, they say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one.”
Glover continued, “You got one life, guys, and to be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys have been such a blessing. I love singing and performing for you guys. As my wife says, ‘If this life is a flavor, as soon as I’m done, get me another scoop.’ You should be living your life how you want because it can only get better. If we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
Glover has been married to Michelle White since 2024 after eight years of dating — and once proclaiming that he didn’t believe in marriage.
“I didn’t know what I was getting out of it,” Glover told The Hollywood Reporter in February 2024 about changing his mind about tying the knot. “I felt like I knew what she was getting out of it, and I didn’t feel like she was being honest, necessarily, about what she was getting out of it. I was thinking about it in such a silly way, which I see now. Now I realize, maybe she’s gaining some stuff, but she’s also losing a lot of stuff. We eventually had an honest talk and she was like, ‘I’m a traditional woman.’ And when she said that, some part of me was like, ‘And I want to help you be that.’”
Glover further stressed that “whatever [his wife] needs” him to be is what makes him happy.
“Especially nowadays, finding trust is so hard,” he added. “The fact that we have this and that we can even argue about it and still be like, ‘But I love you’ — I mean, how many people have that?”
