As WWE prepares for its biggest episode of “Saturday Night’s Main Event” in quite some time, the company seems to be planning a significant change. On Saturday, John Cena will have his final professional wrestling match against “The Ring General” Gunther. At Cena’s request, the show will also feature talent from the “NXT” roster and even one TNA Wrestling star.
A new report from WrestleVotes on Fightful has revealed that WWE is looking at making some unique changes to the presentation of “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” There’s no word on whether or not the planned shift in presentation will be permanent. Many fans have praised WWE for keeping the old-school aesthetics of the special.

Second WWE SNME Revival
When WWE entered a new five-year agreement with NBCUniversal back in 2024, four prime-time specials on NBC per year were included. The company revived “Saturday Night’s Main Event” a second time. The special’s first show in the second revival took place on Dec. 14, 2024. It was headlined by an Undisputed WWE Championship match between titleholder Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens.
The following month, Gunther successfully defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Jey Uso in the special’s headliner. WWE has held three more “Saturday Night’s Main Event” shows since, including Goldberg’s retirement match against Gunther. The most recent card took place on Nov. 1, and CM Punk defeated Uso to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, which was vacated after Seth Rollins suffered a legitimate injury.
WWE is reportedly planning some surprises for the final “Saturday Night’s Main Event” of 2025. What those surprises will end up being remains to be seen. There have been rumblings of potential appearances, but fans won’t have to wait long to find out what transpires inside Capital One Arena in Washington.
