The New York Mets came into last season with high hopes for the year, but they fell short of the postseason after a second-half collapse.
The biggest issue for the Mets was their pitching staff. The starting rotation didn’t do much for most of the season, but it was a massive liability down the stretch.
This offseason, the Mets need to make a move for an ace or two. Their starting rotation can’t continue to hold them back, especially after losing players like Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. But who could the Mets target to upgrade their rotation?
Prediction: Mets sign Framber Valdez to a massive six-year contract
The clear answer for the Mets is a big splash for Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez in free agency.
Valdez would be quite an expensive addition for the Mets, but they seemingly have the money to make a move like this. Jim Bowden of The Athletic projects Valdez will sign for $190 million this offseason, which should be a number the Mets can afford.
It will likely take a six-year deal for the Mets to land him, but that’s a deal worth giving. Securing Valdez to a long-term deal would give the team an ace for the next half-decade or more. Valdez is one of the better left-handed pitchers in the league. The Mets need pitching more than any contending team in baseball. The fit is practically perfect.
