A search and rescue operation has been launched after an Indonesia Air Transport (IAT) ATR 42-500 aircraft suddenly vanished off radar on Saturday in Maros District, South Sulawesi, according to Indonesian news agency ANTARA.
Indonesian search and rescue agency Basarnas has confirmed that 11 people were on board the plane, which is feared to have crashed.
Edy Prakoso, operations director at Basarnas, said the aircraft vanished while flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, ANTARA reported.
“The aircraft was carrying 11 people—eight crew members and three passengers. Its last contact was at 1:17 p.m. local time,” he said.
“We are currently heading to the location after being provided with coordinate points from AirNav, around the Leang-Leang area in Maros Regency,” said Andi Sultan, head of operations at the Basarnas Makassar office.
Unverified footage posted on social media appeared to show debris from the plane at the Foot of Mount Bulusaraung, Pangkep, according to local media.
