The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons with the franchise on Monday, Jan.19, following the team’s loss to the Denver Broncos in the NFL divisional round of the playoffs the day before.
“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team,” owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. “I respect all the work, loyalty and attention to detail he showed for this team and the community. I wish Sean, Jamie and his family all the best.”
The franchise also announced that Brandon Beane will serve as the president of football operations and general manager of the Buffalo Bills and help find the team’s next head coach. “I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization,” Pegula said.
So who will be the Buffalo Bills’ next coach? Now, that opening is being linked to a former Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Former NFL head coach and current analyst Rex Ryan appeared on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Monday, Jan. 19, right as the news about McDermott broke.
Ryan said he wasn’t surprised and even has a new coach in mind for Buffalo.
“I thought this could’ve happened three years ago,” Ryan said of Buffalo’s move. “Everybody looked at me like I had three heads at a guy I thought they would move to, or try to make a move for, was actually Bill Belichick.”

Ryan went on to suggest another fired head coach come to be the team’s offensive coordinator.
“If you want to bring in Brian Daboll, bring him back as the offensive coordinator with Belichick as the head coach,” he said. “I’m telling you, ‘You’re crazy,’ we’ll see how crazy I am.”
He added, “I think that’s a name to watch. I really do, he reiterated about Belichick. Why? Bill Belichick, has he proved that he can win with the best player on the planet, the best quarterback? Yeah, 100 percent he has. That’s what it is.”

Ryan also said that he truly believes having the “greatest coach” work with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills’ team would be a game changer.
“If you can get the greatest coach in the history of our game — and everybody can say it’s passed him by because he doesn’t have Tom Brady — well he’s got a different guy if you get him this [role], and I am telling you I feel strongly about this,” he said.
