A German shepherd mix from the United Kingdom forgot to behave like a guard dog in a viral TikTok clip, and internet users can’t cope with what she did instead.
The hilarious video shared on Sunday by @thegeordieshepherds, shows the poster’s other dog, Buster, a pure-breed German shepherd, barking at something outside the window, while his sister, Bonnie, can’t be bothered to get involved. Newsweek reached out to @thegeordieshepherds for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
Instead, Bonnie, who is mixed with border collie, can be seen standing behind the couch, looking at her brother doing all the work for both of them, pretending to let out a bark only after realizing she has been caught on camera. “When your second dog forgets she’s a guarding breed too,” reads layover text in the clip. A caption shared with the post reads: “He can handle this one.”
Bonnie’s genetics, being only half a guard dog, may have played a role in her reluctance to join her brother in protecting the home.
While German shepherds are considered among the finest guarding dog breeds, border collies are usually not associated with these sorts of duties, mostly because of their friendly and sociable nature.
Georgia-based veterinarian Dr. Jess Kirk says on Vet Explains Pets that border collies are more suitable for herding jobs instead. However, because they are also very clever and versatile canines, with the right training they can become reliable guard dogs, too.
With consistent positive reinforcement training, these canines can effectively learn how to tell friendly faces from intruders, and act accordingly.
The American Kennel Club says the most suitable breeds for guarding duties include most shepherd dogs, Rottweilers, mastiffs and Staffordshire bull terriers among others.
The video quickly went viral on social media, receiving over 559,000 views and more than 93,000 likes on the platform, and internet users can’t stop laughing.
One user, Clare Sullivan, commented: “The token bork to look like they’re making the effort.”
Kobe the Wolf posted: “It’s her day off, leave her alone.”
Angel Kae wrote: “She’s guarding you, he’s guarding the house. Team work!”
Mary The Akitador added: “At least she tried, work smarter not harder.”
