The United States women’s hockey team entered its gold medal game against Canada as the clear favorite, but it was the American’s neighbor to the North that controlled the game … until the final two minutes.
In her last Olympics, USA legend Hilary Knight, who just got engaged ahead of the game, scored the game-tying goal with just over two minutes left in the third period after the U.S. pulled its goalie with the puck in the offensive zone. Veteran defenseman Lee Stecklein raved about Knight’s performance after becoming the all-time leader in most goals (15) and points (33) in an Olympic career among American men and women.
“I think that’s the perfect way for her to break the record,” Stecklein said. “She carries that pressure and she knows we’re relying on her. If it wasn’t her, I do believe it could have been someone else. But also, it’s so not surprising for it to be her because that’s just who she is and who she’s always been.”
It was veteran defenseman Megan Keller, though, that scored the game-winning goal off of a backhand after splitting a defenders legs with the puck.

“Seriously – total production malpractice. How do you not keep the camera on Megan Keller?!” college football writer Pete Fiutak suggested on social media.
“The director won’t sleep for days after this. Just a total botch job on the biggest moment of the Olympics. I can’t believe how bad the sequencing was following the goal. Just so brutal,” suggested another before a third added, “Thought the same thing. Some of the worst camera work you can have in a moment like this.”
Veteran media insider Andrew Marchand also suggested NBC will make a change following this game. “I wouldn’t be surprised if NBC uses some low angles in prime time, as many have noted, the live world feed had trouble finding the initial shots,” he said.
NBC may not have had it’s A-game here, but the U.S. women delivered in the clutch.
