It’s all ears — and chocolate.
Just in time for Easter, Costco is selling a 10-pound Giant Chocolate Bunny, and you’ll need a hammer to eat it.
The edible bunny is listed on Costco.com at a range of prices depending on local market conditions, with reports as low as $57, while some in-store shoppers have spotted it for up to $140.
Made of milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate, the semi-solid bunny consists of 151 servings, with 150 calories per serving, according to the package. That’s a hare-raising 22,650 calories for the whole rabbit.
Maud Borup, the Minnesota food company that makes the bunny, told USA Today that it is made from fair-trade chocolate and is only being sold at Costco for now.
The chocolate bunny is “perfect for surprising the kids on Easter morning or as a show stopper centerpiece when entertaining,” the company said in a statement to the outlet.
Maud Borup’s Instagram post about the chocolate bunny revealed that his name is Pete.
“Pete is ten pounds of smooth, rich chocolate turned centerpiece, basket showstopper, and egg-stagram sensation,” the post said. “First, he’s admired, then he’s cracked or cut. A hop-tastic moment that turns a bunny spectacle into shareable bites. One giant bunny, a hundred little moments of chocolate.”
The packaging also includes instructions on how to eat the oversized hopper — by smashing it or slicing it.
It suggests to “wrap Pete in a towel and give one bold whack” with a hammer, mallet or rolling pin.
For a more civilized way of eating the giant chocolate bunny, it advises to warm up a serrated bread knife, dry it fully, then “cut gently, ears or feet first is up to you.”
If you have leftovers, the packaging suggests grating the chocolate to make hot chocolate, using pieces in cookies or brownies, or saving them for a sweet treat.
On social media, Costco shoppers are sharing how the bunny “had people stopping in their tracks,” one noted.
“You are not prepared for the size of this bunny at Costco,” a Costco food blog wrote on Instagram. “It honestly looks like the ultimate Easter statement piece, and you could break pieces off for days.” The video showed that the bunny at the user’s Costco location cost a whopping $134.99.
People in the comments sections were both infatuated and confused by the giant edible bunny.
“I think the instructions are hilarious! ‘wrap Pete in a towel and whack him with a hammer,’ ” a user laughed.
“This is the first time I’ve thought, what is Costco thinking?” someone said.
“Why would anyone buy this? I am genuinely confused,” a Reddit user asked.
“There’s my centerpiece…. Two of these are cheaper than flowers,” one shared.
Others were hopping mad about the price tag.
“Ummm, for $140, Pete can STAY at Costco,” one wrote.
“The 5lb chocolate heart for Valentine’s Day was $20 and I thought that was expensive!” another noted.
“$14 a pound for chocolate is beyond crazy,” a commenter wrote.
“Buy a week’s worth of groceries or a giant chocolate bunny,” someone added.
