The NFL draft is on the horizon, and for the Los Angeles Rams — who were just a handful of plays away from reaching the Super Bowl last season — they’ll be one of the teams to watch as they look to improve their roster and plan for the future.
The Rams are set to welcome back quarterback Matthew Stafford after his MVP season, but with Stafford having contemplated retirement, questions remain about how much longer he wants to play. That uncertainty could create an opportunity for the Rams to add a young quarterback to groom as his successor — an idea ESPN’s Matt Miller highlighted in his latest NFL mock draft released Monday.
Miller projects the Rams to target a quarterback in the second round, selecting Penn State Nittany Lions star Drew Allar. Allar entered the past college season as a projected top pick, but inconsistent performances and a season-ending injury caused his draft stock to drop.
“Matthew Stafford was last season’s MVP, but he’s also 38 years old,” Miller wrote. “The Rams could take a swing on Allar’s traits and potential, developing him for a season while tapping into his high-end arm talent.”

Allar possesses elite arm talent, making him an exciting prospect if he lands in a system like McVay’s. He could potentially sit and learn behind Stafford for a year or two before getting his opportunity to start.
Last season with the Nittany Lions — who had a collectively underwhelming campaign relative to preseason expectations — Allar completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions over six games. Across his collegiate career, he threw for 7,402 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
