For the last few seasons, the St. Louis Cardinals have found themselves in the middle of contending and selling. They continued to try to buy, while they also continued to fall short of contending.
So heading into John Mozeliak’s final year in charge of the Cardinals, all signs point to them doing what they should have done years ago: sell and rebuild.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today believes the same thing, suggesting that the Cardinals will wave the “white flag” for a sell-off.
“The Cardinals are waving the white flag before the holidays and are open for business, willing to listen to trades on anyone,” Nightengale wrote. “You want (Nolan) Arenado? How about Gray? All-Star catcher Willson Contreras? All-Star closer Ryan Helsley? The Cardinals are all ears as they embark on a reboot.”
It’s about time for St. Louis to hit the restart button. For the last few seasons, the Cardinals have had one of the older rosters in the game, but they’ve failed to produce any kind of success.
St. Louis began its offseason by declining the club options on pitchers Keynan Middleton, Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. The Cardinals are expected to let Paul Goldschmidt sign to another team with no effort to re-sign him this winter.
After the 2025 season, Chaim Bloom will take over as the president of baseball operations for the Cardinals. Mozeliak will likely be handing the team to Bloom with a clean slate of a roster.
