Justice Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday signaled the Supreme Court may move to block a lawsuit accusing tech giant Cisco of helping China persecute members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement, questioning whether federal courts are allowing too many similar cases to proceed.
The justices are weighing whether the suit can move forward under two federal human rights laws after an appellate court revived the claims. Much of the conservative majority’s skepticism focused on limits to lawsuits tied to alleged abuses abroad. Falun Gong members say Cisco customized surveillance technology for Beijing knowing it would be used to identify, detain and torture believers.
A ruling is expected by late June.
