It’s been an eventful weekend for Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is preparing to enter his second NFL season.
On Saturday, he took time to officially graduate from the University of Colorado, where he spent two seasons after transferring from Jackson State following his sophomore year.
Sanders earned a degree in sociology, the study of human social relationships and interactions. He finished his academic career, at least for now, with an impressive 3.9 GPA, which roughly translates to a 94–98 percent average.

Fans had mixed reactions to the news, with many showing support while others offered unnecessary criticism — something Sanders is certainly used to.
“Maybe he can use that degree when his NFL career doesn’t work out,” one fan said.
Another added, “So proud of you, big dawg! Keep striving!”
A different fan wrote, “Perfect degree for what he’s trying to do to impact the community.”
“Good for him. That’s awesome. Love it when they finish the job,” another commented.
This is a significant accomplishment for Sanders. It not only opens doors for him beyond football, whether during or after his NFL career, but also adds to a strong academic track record within his family. His father, Deion Sanders, earned his degree in 2020 from Talladega College in Business Administration.
His brother, Shilo Sanders, earned a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Jackson State before going on to complete his master’s in the same field at Colorado.
For Shedeur, who is often in the spotlight because of both his play and his last name, continuing to grow as a communicator — especially with the media — matters. It’s an area he has improved in over time. It also gives him a foundation to make an impact off the field, particularly in his community, as he continues to develop as a player within the Browns organization while competing for the starting job early in the offseason.
Many pro athletes over the years have studied sociology in college and used it to build platforms that extend far beyond their respective sports.
NBA superstar Stephen Curry studied sociology at Davidson, while Cam Newton did the same at Auburn. They’re just two notable examples of athletes who have taken a similar path to Sanders.
