Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was hospitalized after being struck down by a virus that overwhelmed his lungs which were “already compromised” due to toxins from ground zero dust, according to an official statement.
Giuliani, who remains in hospital, lives with breathing difficulties every day because of the consequences of being covered with white dust on 9/11, according to the statement from his primary care provider Dr. Maria Ryan, shared by his X account.
Ryan said that Giuliani recently caught metapneumovirus, a common virus that can infect the nose, throat and lungs.
Giuliani, 81, had been placed on a ventilator in a hospital in Florida last week as he struggled to breathe with pnuemonia. Ryan had previously told Fox News that he had been visited by a priest on Sunday evening, but has now been moved out of the intensive care unit and is able to breathe on his own.
His lawyer had previously told the New York Times he is applying for free medical care through the World Trade Center Health Program
