The United Kingdom’s Deputy Ambassador to the U.S. has abruptly left his role in Washington D.C., according to reports.
James Roscoe occupied one of the most senior positions in the British diplomatic service as deputy head of the British Embassy in Washington D.C. The British newspaper The Times has reported that he was sacked.
According the report, Roscoe is facing questions in an investigation into the leak of confidential discussions at a meeting of the National Security Council.
A Foreign Office spokesperson told The Guardian: “James Roscoe has left his post.” No reason was given for his departure or the abrupt nature of it. It has not been confirmed whether he was sacked or left voluntarily.
Roscoe had also served as acting ambassador for several months following the dismissal last year of Peter Mandelson, the former U.K. ambassador, over his links to pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Roscoe was considered a leading contender for the permanent post, which was ultimately awarded to another diplomat, Sir Christian Turner.
Newsweek has contacted the U.K. Foreign Office for comment via email.
This is a developing story. More to follow.
