Anthony Edwards is currently in the middle of a five-year max contract he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, which runs through the 2028–29 season.
That means, for now, the Timberwolves still hold significant leverage if Edwards were ever to express frustration with the organization and request a trade — something that has not happened following the team’s postseason exit.
Still, Minnesota has now failed to advance beyond the conference finals and suffered four consecutive playoff exits, including back-to-back Western Conference Finals losses in 2023–24 and 2024–25.

According to Darren Wolfson of Eyewitness News, a prominent Minnesota sports reporter, the Timberwolves are reportedly beginning to “fear” that Edwards could at some point request a trade if the team is unable to build the right roster and coaching staff around the former No. 1 overall pick.
“But it’s about satisfying Ant. The fear is that at some point, does Ant, through his representation, Bill Duffy and others, signal a desire to be elsewhere? We are nowhere near that point, but the fear is there,” Wolfson said.
When Edwards was asked if the Timberwolves need another star on the roster, he responded simply, “I feel good” about where the team stands in terms of roster construction.
Still, it’s clear that in order to compete with teams like the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference, Minnesota will need not only star talent but also a well-balanced roster capable of matching up across the board.
Whether the Timberwolves believe they already have that group in place or need further upgrades is likely to be a key question heading into the offseason and any potential roster moves.
