Strangers and senior Trump Administration officials visited the grave of a U.S. soldier killed in combat in Iraq after his wife made a plea on social media.
Sharrell Anne Shaw — the wife of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Alan Wayne Shaw who died in 2007 — asked people on X if they would stop by her husband’s grave in Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day and leave a photo for her family.
The scale of the response was unexpected, with many X users sharing photos of Shaw’s grave with message for the family. Senior officials including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard also visited the grave.
Nick Sortor, the conservative influencer, wrote on X: “Last night, Gold Star wife Sharrell Anne made a plea on X, asking for a photo of her late husband SSG Alan Shaw’s grave at Arlington And MAN did patriots step up! DOZENS have visited SSG Shaw’s gravesite, including DNI Tulsi Gabbard, who left a gift. So freaking proud that we could make this happen! THANK YOU, PATRIOTS!”
Shaw said that the reaction to her post had “honestly caught me off guard.” She added: “dozens of Americans from all walks of life had made the walk to Section 60 to visit SSG Alan W. Shaw… People who had never met Alan, but chose to honor him anyway.”
This is a developing story. More to follow.
