The Cleveland Cavaliers were officially eliminated from the playoffs on Monday night following a blowout 130-93 loss to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Following the defeat, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert quickly issued a message on social media, thanking fans for their support throughout the season while also hinting that major changes could potentially be coming this offseason as Cleveland searches for a way to get over the postseason hump.
“We took a step ahead this spring, but we are nowhere near where we need to be,” Gilbert posted on X. “I can’t thank the fans enough for the support this year. We will dig in all summer and do everything we possibly can to take the next step. We will grind until we get there. Congrats to the Knicks, and best of luck in the Finals.”

The Cavaliers have the majority of their roster under contract for the 2026-27 season, while veteran guard James Harden holds a player option and will soon need to decide whether to remain in Cleveland or enter free agency and test the market.
Either way, Cleveland’s core of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen is expected to return next season barring a trade, meaning the organization’s focus will likely shift toward building around that group. One name that continues to surface is LeBron James.
James has already had two previous stints in Cleveland and helped deliver the franchise’s only championship in 2016.
That said, he has yet to decide whether he wants to return for a 24th NBA season. If he does continue playing, he will almost certainly have multiple offers in free agency, and a return to Cleveland would likely have to be motivated by more than finances, as the Cavaliers currently do not project to have much salary cap space available unless significant roster changes are made.
