Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy made headlines this week when he refused to sugarcoat his feelings about the team signing Kyler Murray.
“It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” McCarthy said after the team’s second OTA of the spring. “He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us.”
Just a few days later, ESPN’s Kevin Seifert penned a new column that revealed the Vikings quarterback battle is revealing a clear winner – and it’s not McCarthy. Former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray has reportedly flashed in practice thus far.

“Overall, the afternoon was a reminder that McCarthy could continue along the upward trajectory he established at the end of last season — and still fall well short of matching Murray’s experience, arm talent and potential to make big plays in the passing game,” Seifert said following Thursday’s practice.
“There is a very realistic world where McCarthy takes clear steps this offseason and still doesn’t mount a serious challenge to Murray, and this week we saw a clear glimpse of what it would look like,” Seifert concluded.
It certainly sounds like Murray is winning the quarterback battle and it might not be that close. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given the fact that Murray was a quality starting quarterback in the league and would be an improvement for a handful of teams across the league.
