A 71-year-old nurse has been accused of stealing from her elderly patients as she is charged with 77 felonies over her unlicensed home care business.
Santa Barbara County District Attorney John T. Savrnoch said Rosanne Marquis stole from her victims, failed to file accurate tax returns and did not make required deductions or payments to the state Employment Development Department on behalf of her employees for years.
Marquis is accused of stealing “over $100,000,” according to The Santa Barbara Independent. The victims included an elderly veteran, prosecutors said.
The nurse has owned and operated Rosanne Marquis HomeCare Service, which lists a Hope Ranch property as its address, since at least 2019.
She previously worked as a trauma nurse coordinator for Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for more than two decades, according to her LinkedIn.
She also worked at Santa Ynez Hospital and served on the boards of the Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) and the Alzheimer’s Women’s Initiative.
A board member biography for Marquis says she worked as a critical care nurse for 35 years, during which she was “exposed to the end results of addiction.”
The elderly abuse case is being prosecuted by the Santa Barbara DA’s office with investigative support from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs Office of Inspector General and the California Employment Development Department.
The 71-year-old was arrested for her alleged crimes in April and has been out on bail.
Marquis was scheduled to be arraigned in Santa Barbara Superior Court on Wednesday.
