For a limited time, McDonald’s is helping customers rise and shine with a bougie addition.
The fast-food titan is elevating breakfast with two new offerings that feel more like a gourmet brunch than a standard drive-through order.
The Honey Brown Butter Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit and the Honey Brown Butter Chicken Biscuit are the latest menu additions, and while they’re set to officially launch nationwide on July 21, many locations are already serving the sammies.
The new sandwiches are not wildly different from the breakfast biscuits already in rotation; the former comes with folded egg, two half-strips of bacon, and American cheese, while the latter comes laden with a crispy chicken patty.
What distinguishes these new biscuits from their plebeian predecessors is the new honey brown butter sauce.
Beloved for its caramelized color and rich, nutty taste, brown butter, known in French as beurre noisette, is a staple of gourmet cooking, used for centuries to fortify flavors in both sweet and savory offerings.
The bougie butter has gone mainstream as of late, with Pillsbury launching brown butter cookie dough and McCormick bringing Brown Butter Finishing Salt to the table.
While the butter is served on both of the namesake McDonald’s sandwiches, the sauce is also available as an upcharge on any other breakfast offering.
Early adopters are celebrating.
“This combination is sweet, savory, and just delicious,” proclaimed a recent TikTok post.
Content creator Redneck Snack was similarly stoked, giving the sauce a 10/10 review.
“That brown butter is absolutely delicious; it’s sweet, it’s rich. It just pairs so amazingly, and you can get it on anything you like. If you like a melty, buttery, sweet sauce, I think you’re gonna love this one.”
McDonald’s foray into brown butter is in keeping with current trends, with fast-food chains increasingly integrating epicurean ingredients: Popeyes is proudly serving black truffle on its chicken sandwich, and Arby’s has opted to add Wagyu and wild game to its menu.
Per the brown butter breakfast sammies, Redditors, as per usual, have thoughts.
“It’s exactly what it says. Just a bacon, egg, and cheese with honey butter. Not bad at all, but I’ll stick to the sausage McMuffin,” said one.
Another commenter affirmed that the latest offering is, in fact, a standard bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit with a smear of limited-time-offer sauce.
Others took issue not with the taste but with what they see as a ridiculously long-winded menu item.
“5 years from now humans won’t be satisfied with a sandwich name that’s only 10 words long, nor will they be ok with the limited toppings. Headlines in 5 yrs will read… Here yee, here yee…Coming Tuesday .. ‘The Jumbo Baconation Peanut Butter and Jelly with Jalapenos and 5 Cheeses topped with Salmon and cream cheese on a toasted Sweet Hawaiian bun with crumbled peppermint on top.’”
In addition to brown butter, McDonald’s revealed it’s adding a Caesar sauce to its menu for the first time, sparking mixed reactions from customers.
Described as “a creamy, garlicky parmesan blend infused with notes of lemon,” the sauce will be available on the Caesar Snack Wrap and the Bacon Caesar McCrispy. Fans can also pair the condiment with McCrispy Strips, which debuted in May and feature a new “even crispier” panko-coated breading.
