Frightening footage captured the dramatic moment that passengers screamed in terror as their plane appeared to fall apart during a flight across Iran.
The Sepehran Airlines flight had been slated to fly from Mashhad to Kermanshah Sept. 15, Jam Press reported. However, disaster struck shortly after takeoff, when the Boeing 737 suffered a mechanical failure.
In the wild clip, the aircraft is seen shaking violently, causing panels to fall from the ceiling as terrified passengers shout and pray.
Meanwhile, some flyers were reportedly hit by items falling from the cargo bins, although no injuries were reported.
To avert further disaster, the captain turned the aircraft around and ferried the 127 passengers back to Mashhad.
Upon landing, the frightened flyers were safely led off the plane and transferred to another aircraft so they could complete their trip to Kermanshah.
The mishap reportedly prompted authorities to temporarily shutter one of the two runways at Mashhad International Airport.
Initial accounts said that a tire had burst during the flight, although this has not been confirmed to be the cause of the fiasco, Indian Express reported.
Iranian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
This isn’t the first time a Boeing 737 operated by Sepehran came apart when the rubber hit the runway.
In August, one of their flights from Tehran to Mashhad swerved off the tarmac after touching down and came to a halt, whereupon its nose landing gear collapsed, news.com.au reported.
