Timothée Chalamet’s performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown may have earned him multiple nominations this awards season — but it was his onstage slip-up at the 2025 SAG Awards that had his costars (and the audience) laughing.
Chalamet, 29, took the SAGs stage on Sunday, February 23, to introduce the film alongside his fellow cast members Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro and Edward Norton. The actors are nominated for four SAG Awards on Sunday night: Cast in a Motion Picture, Male Actor in a Leading Role for Chalamet, Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Barbaro, and Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Norton (which he lost out to Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain).
Starting off strong, Chalamet — who channeled Dylan in a black leather jacket, lime green shirt and diamond bolo tie — quoted late director David Lynch in his introduction of the biopic.
“As David Lynch once said about Bob Dylan, ‘He tapped into some kind of vein and he keeps on, keepin’ on,'” Chalamet said into the mic. However, it appeared as if the Oscar nominee didn’t realize he was supposed to continue with the speech, as a few seconds of an awkward pause ensued.
“A Complete Unknown traces that vein,” he went on after the brief silence, before quipping, “Shoulda done a rehearsal.”
As the audience laughed, so did his costars — who also wore amused expressions on their faces while trying to stifle the laughter amid the awkward silence.
Following Chalamet’s brief mishap, both he and his fellow actors were able to continue the speech, with each sharing the importance of their own characters in the film. (While Barbaro and Norton portrayed real people heavily involved in Dylan’s life and career — Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, respectively — Fanning portrayed the fictional Sylvie Russo, who is based on Dylan’s real-life love, Suze Rotolo.)
Chalamet is the favorite to win the 2025 Outstanding Male Actor SAG Award on Sunday night. He is also nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for the role, which will be revealed next weekend.
