A dog who has spent most of her life at the shelter and hasn’t received any adoption interest since October 2022 is still waiting to find a loving home.
Millie the 5-year-old pit bull mix arrived at Always and Furever Animal Sanctuary in Kansas back in 2019, when she was found as “a starving puppy.” She went on to spend the next three years waiting to be noticed by someone willing to adopt her.
It was thought that her special day arrived in 2022 as Millie was finally chosen by a potential adopter. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Kelly Frey, intake coordinator at Always and Furever Animal Sanctuary, told Newsweek that Millie was returned shortly after through “no fault of her own” in October 2022.
Since then, the search to find Millie’s forever family has continued, but it’s not been an easy one. The poor dog hasn’t received a single adoption application for more than two years, and she’s now one of the longest-serving residents at the shelter.
“We sometimes wonder if people are intimidated by Millie’s personality,” Frey said. “She may be a vocal, energetic dog, but people fail to notice that she is also so loving.
Frey continued: “Millie loves to give kisses and snuggle up with anyone she meets. She can be a little demanding when playing and loves to use her voice—but that’s part of her charm. As far as dogs are concerned, we’re unsure how she interacts, but she has recently moved to our little red barn so she can work with our trainer to hopefully make a dog friend.”
Unfortunately, rescues who don’t necessarily get along well with other dogs can be harder to rehome. Frey suggests that most people want a pup who they can take to the dog park without concerns.
Despite having to wait so long to find a home, the rescue organization refuses to give up on Millie. They are hopeful that her family is out there and will find her one day.
She would be best suited to an active household, and she loves nothing more than getting to run around open spaces.
“She would absolutely love a yard to play and run. Millie loves people of all ages and would thrive living with a family who will give her lots of love and attention. Millie is a dog who you just have to give a chance,” Frey told Newsweek.
There’s no doubt she deserves a second chance at life, having spent most of her time at the rescue sanctuary. Throughout these years, she’s become quite the staff favorite.
Madelyn Van Aken, one of the shelter’s dog caretakers, said that everyone is desperate to find Millie a home because she’s so deserving of it.
Van Aken said: “When I first met her, I expected her to be just another pup coming through, but everyone that meets her immediately falls in love. She is so loved and cherished by the staff.”
Always and Furever Animal Sanctuary often share posts on social media to show people how amazing their intakes are. By sharing Millie’s story, they hope she will finally get noticed and learn what it means to become part of a family.
