The Toronto Blue Jays are in quite a tough spot with superstar infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The superstar is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and the Blue Jays have to decide whether they should trade him or hold onto him for the 2025 season.
If the Blue Jays opt to trade Guerrero, it’ll likely come at the 2025 MLB trade deadline under some very specific circumstances. For Toronto to trade him, it’ll need to be out of the postseason picture in 2025. If the Blue Jays are chasing a postseason berth, there’s no way they’ll trade their best player.
And the Blue Jays would need to get a loaded trade offer from a team that’s not one of their biggest rivals. This likely means the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are out of the trade sweepstakes for Guerrero. Both teams are expected to be key names in the free agency sweepstakes next winter, though.
The trade offer would need to be more than just loaded. It would have to be something the Blue Jays couldn’t dare resist.
One team that may have the assets and guts to make such an offer is the New York Mets.
New York is in win-now mode. The Mets brought in Juan Soto and re-signed Pete Alonso. They don’t necessarily need a first baseman, but adding Guerrero and slotting either him or Alonso in the designated hitter spot doesn’t sound like a bad idea.
It would be quite costly for New York, obviously. But Mets owner Steve Cohen seems so eager to spend money that the Mets can afford to dump some of the farm system to bring in premier bats.
New York also has the ability to re-sign Guerrero next winter. This is a huge piece of the puzzle, as it might not be worth it to mortgage the farm system for a half-year rental.
If the Blue Jays are going to trade Guerrero, the Mets would make the most sense.
