The Toronto Blue Jays saw their lead in the division shrink to just two games after they gave up their latest series against the rival New York Yankees.
Now the team will look to bounce back against the Houston Astros. But an off day between those matchups will be critical, as one of their best players is recovering from an unfortunate injury setback.
During the Yankees series, franchise shortstop Bo Bichette hurt his shin after sliding into catcher Austin Wells. Though he stayed in that game, he was benched for Sunday’s tilt as his injury worsened, and it isn’t clear whether or not he’ll be in the lineup for Tuesday’s matchup with the Astros.
When asked for an update on Bichette, Blue Jays manager John Schneider offered a simple two-word response on how he’s feeling.
“He’s sore,” Schneider said, per Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star.
“He woke up a little more sore,” Schneider added, according to Chisholm. “So it’s a timely off day for him and we’ll see how he is Tuesday. Nothing additional, no further testing or anything.”
Blue Jays fans can breathe a sigh of relief that Bichette’s injury hasn’t called for additional testing. But they’ll also be hoping that he can put any soreness behind him in short order.
The shortstop is enjoying a career season at the plate as he heads toward a lucrative free agency period. He is slashing .311/.357/.483 so far and ranks as Major League Baseball’s hits and doubles leader up to this point.
If the Blue Jays have hopes of hanging onto their division lead in the final weeks before the playoffs, they could certainly use a healthy return from Bichette.
