The body of an elderly man was found face down inside the polluted Gowanus Canal Thursday afternoon, according to police.
The man, 69, was discovered in the water around 2 p.m. near Nevins and Butler streets in Brooklyn, authorities said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Disturbing images from the scene show the man’s fully clothed body face down on a row of rocks in the canal — a designated Superfund site and one of the most heavily contaminated waterways in the country — before the remains were retrieved by officers.
The medical examiner’s office will determine the manner and cause of death before the NYPD knows if foul play was suspected.
No additional information, including the man’s identity, was provided Thursday evening.
