From touching reunions between owners and pets to unexpected furry guests crashing inside people’s homes, this week’s pet stories delivered moments of joy, shock and heartache.
Newsweek readers also delivered plenty of wow-worthy pet moments, earning them a feature in this week’s “Pet of the Week.”
If you want your pet to be considered for next week’s lineup, follow the instructions at the end of this article to get involved.
Winner
This week’s winner is a rescue cat named Queen Sheba, who, unlike most kids, wants to eat her vegetables.
Owner Roxanne Sock told Newsweek that Queen Sheba was found abandoned as a kitten in a trailer park, near where a family member lives. She put off getting a cat for years, unsure when the right time would be, but when Queen Sheba came around, she couldn’t say no. Now, at 2 years old, her cat is sassy and sweet, all rolled into one.
In the video, Queen Sheba is rubbing her head all over a bag of carrots. Sock said she was “tapped and sassed” by her cat until she gave up the carrots.
“It’s so odd she loves carrots,” Sock said. “I’ve never seen a cat go nuts over carrots like her.”
Finalists
This week’s first finalist captured us instantly with his “ice blue eyes.”
Ranay Flowers has a 4-year-old Doberman pinscher, Ax’l, who was born with piercing blue eyes, like most puppies. As they grow, their eye colors will change. Dobies typically have brown eyes, but not Ax’l. His remained a bright blue, which Flowers calls a treasure.
“They only got lighter in color as he grew older,” she said. “Everywhere we go, we get stopped and people are mesmerized by him. He’s one of a kind.”
Flowers said Ax’l is incredibly smart, funny and loves to sing. He’ll even have “conversations” with her.
Next up is a family’s newest furry member, fitting right into the mix.
Owner Dominique Fleming and family recently brought home an orange and white kitten named Gigi. This fearless kitty showed no hesitation in adjusting to a life with dogs. Fleming said she managed to win over her doggy brothers, who, in return, have fallen in love with her.
“It is such a joy to see them all getting along so well,” she told Newsweek.
And finally, we have Sierra, a rescue dog who ended up rescuing her owner.
After bringing home Sierra from an animal rescue, Michael Leffers understood the importance of adopting. He told Newsweek that Sierra is smart and “full of spirit.” She made a perfect addition to the family.
“I love my girl and would adopt more if I could give them all the same attention,” he said. “But Sierra gets all of mine for now.”
