The Chicago Bears came up inches short of pulling off another miraculous comeback on “Sunday Night Football” against the San Francisco 49ers, but the loss might be the last thing on their minds following a major injury on the final play of the game.
Luther Burden III, a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Missouri, was having a career night on Sunday as he had a career-high 138 yards and a touchdown. He and Caleb Williams were in sync the entire night, as the former No. 1 overall pick kept finding the rookie in the most important moments of a back-and-forth offensive slugfest.
With the Bears down four with time ticking down, Williams and Burden spearheaded the attack to march down the field and get only a few yards from the endzone with four seconds left on the clock.
In a final dramatic play, Williams spun around several San Francisco defenders and caught Burden breaking for the game-winning touchdown. Alas, their perfect connection was just off by a millisecond on the final throw of the game, Burden diving as the ball bounced in front of his outstretched hands.

While the Niners celebrated and booked a game next week with the Seattle Seahawks, not only for the NFC West crown but No. 1 seed in the NFC, Burden remained limp on the ground. As medical staff came to check on him, he could only get to his knees as he tried his best to stand on his feet.
He was not able to leave the field on his own power, as he was carted off with an undisclosed injury.
The Bears enter Week 18 as NFC North champions and will play the Detroit Lions before hosting a wildcard-round opponent a week later at Soldier Field.
