Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is no stranger to criticism, though his play has been anything but the problem when it comes to the franchise’s struggles in 2025.
Prescott completed 25 of 34 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, but it wasn’t good enough, as the defense surrendered 30 points and Dallas lost the game on a late field goal.
The Cowboys are now 2-3-1, despite averaging almost 30 points per game. And Prescott has been playing at a near MVP-caliber level, completing 71.6% of his 229 pass attempts (38.1 per game) for a total of 1,617 yards, 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

But as a frequent object of derision during less productive years, Prescott understands leadership and the volatility of an NFL locker room — particularly when one side of the football is carrying the other and wins are subsequently tough to come by.
As such, Prescott didn’t throw the Cowboys’ defense under the bus during his postgame press conference, but instead offered resounding support for the unit, as well as optimism that it can turn things around as the season presses on.
“We go against them every day. It’s an iron-sharpens-iron mentality,” Prescott said, per Nick Harris of the Star Telegram. “I understand the players and the pieces that they have over there. You see them working each and every day. You see them getting better. At the end of the day, they’re getting better. The communication, they’re getting the ball out, so they’re going to get better.”
The Dallas defense has surrendered just shy of 31 points per game in 2025.
