When a sudden hailstorm rolled through Oklahoma recently, one lucky pup thought all her dreams had come true—and over 1.7 million people have shared in her joy.
Minnie, a 3-year-old Boxer, has gained viral attention after her owner, Emma Galles, captured a hilarious and heartwarming video of her dog reacting to an unexpected downpour of her favorite treat: ice.
The now-viral clip shared the moment Minnie was gleefully bounding around the backyard as hail pelts the ground—and occasionally, her back.
“When all the sudden your favorite treat starts raining down from the sky!!!” the video caption said.
“Any time we go to the fridge, Minnie comes sprinting the moment she hears the ice dispenser,” Galles told Newsweek. “She’ll just stand there and stare at us until she gets an ice cube—drool literally starts pouring from her mouth while she waits. We call this the ice tax that we have to pay.”
Experts say that it is generally safe to give dogs ice cubes, and it can even be a great way to keep them cool, but there are precautions to keep in mind. The main risk with giving ice cubes is choking, especially for small dogs or dogs that gulp their food.
Chewing on hard ice cubes can also crack or damage a dog’s teeth, especially if the cubes are large or very firm. Smaller cubes or even ice chips are often a better idea.
But for Minnie, when hail began to fall outside, she had a moment of total bewilderment—quickly followed by pure delight.
“At first, she was totally confused, she’d never seen hail before,” Galles said. “But once she realized it was just her beloved ice falling from the sky, she lost it. She kept running outside to grab pieces off the ground.
“She didn’t quite understand why they kept hitting her in the back though, so she’d dash back inside every time one hit her, then turn around and try again. It was hilarious and so cute.”
As the video, shared last month, went viral on TikTok, people shared their reactions.
“Cloudy with a chance of TREATS,” said viewer kylienotajenner. While another viewer shared a similar joke: “Cloudy with a chance of crunch water.”
“We call them water cookies in our house,” said a fellow dog owner.
“She was excited, confused, scared, and surprised all at once,” said TikToker Steph. “Poor thing!”
