Ed Sheeran’s biggest lesson to date is never drink Café Patron with friends in a European hotel.
“I’ve never said this publicly, but I’m gonna say it,” Sheeran, 34, said during his “Call Her Daddy” podcast appearance on Wednesday, April 9, when asked about his most embarrassing drunk moment. (Sheeran has been open about his recent bout with sobriety.)
The night in question took place in either 2018 or 2019 after Sheeran played a show in an undisclosed city in Europe. After a night out with his “best mate,” whose family was in town, Sheeran went to bed.
“I got up in the middle of the night to have a pee, and I was sleeping naked. I walked out to have a pee, and then I hear a door close,” he recalled. “I open my eyes and I’m in the corridor naked, no key, it’s like 4 a.m.”
Sheeran immediately clocked the hotel security cameras in the hallways.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, this is not good,’” he continued. “Someone had room service, and I went to go and get the napkin. I put the napkin on, clicked the lift, went down to the lobby — bear in mind, it’s like 4 a.m. — there’s people working in the hotel.”
He needed the hotel employees’ help getting back into his room — and made sure to ask: “Can you not tell anyone about this?” Sheeran noted that he saw their “eyes widen” when he approached the front desk.
The next morning, Sheeran shared the story with his security guard who “wiped” all the security footage of the incident.
“He might have kept it for blackmail later on down the line,” Sheeran joked to host Alex Cooper. “I think that was the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done.”
Sheeran didn’t seem to have too many regrets over the situation, however, calling it “a very human mistake.” The entire debacle did teach him a very important lesson.
“I then bought pajamas,” Sheeran said through laughter. “I started sleeping in pajamas.”
Drunken nights haven’t been a thing for Sheeran as of late due to his sobriety.
“I’m sober at the moment so that’s definitely helping the not doing stupid s***,” he said. “I saw the schedule for this year of [my] album release. I’m basically flying all around the world and then flying home and being ‘dad’ as well. I don’t want to then add on an extra layer of tiredness on that, so I’m just going to not drink and be very focused and energized.”
Sheeran — who shares two daughters, Lyra, 4, and Jupiter, 2, with wife Cherry Seaborn — clarified that he’s “not going to be sober forever,” but his relationship to alcohol has evolved.
“I used to drink every single day,” he explained. “I’m not a spirits guy. I kind of do beer a little bit, but I’m more of like a wine guy at the end of the day. Now, I’m not doing that.”
