CBS’ highly anticipated Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue is in the works — but what is there to know about the show so far?
Blue Bloods, which premiered in 2010, followed the lives of the Reagan family, many of whom worked for the NYPD. Speculation that Blue Bloods would end started in 2023, when the police procedural was renewed after the cast and producers agreed to take a 25 percent pay cut. Wahlberg exclusively told Us Weekly in April 2023 that he hoped to see Blue Bloods achieve the same level of success as Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
“I mean, Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay have been going for gosh, so many years, and we hope to last as long as they have,” he shared at the time. “One of the things I’ve done is I try to just stay very present in each episode and take each script that comes my way and say, ‘OK, what’s gonna happen now? You know, what am I doing this week?’ And kind of find the journey in that particular episode and not get caught up in what’s gonna happen next year, what’s gonna happen in two years.”
Wahlberg noted that he wasn’t opposed to the idea of a Blue Bloods spinoff, joking, “Danny and Erin become private investigators and move to Hawaii, but that was too close to [Tom Selleck’s iconic 1980s series] Magnum, P.I., so we didn’t want to do that one.”
The actor got his wish with Boston Blue, which was announced after Blue Bloods ended in December 2024. Several of Wahlberg’s costars — including Tom Selleck — have discussed hopefully joining another project in the Blue Bloods universe.
“I’m open to suggestions, because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked,” Selleck told Parade in December 2024. “I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere.”
Vanessa Ray, meanwhile, told TV Insider in October 2024, “I would do anything with these people. So, yes, of course. I don’t know what world it would make sense for Eddie to be in a spinoff at all. But if they need to put me in a wig and dye my eyebrows and I’ll play a different character just so I get to hang out with all of them more, then I’ll do it.”

What Is ‘Boston Blue’ About?
The spinoff stars Wahlberg as Danny Reagan as the former NYPD officer “takes on a position” with the Boston P.D. “Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” read the official logline.
Boston Blue‘s executive producers include Brandon Sonnier, Brandon Margolis, Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed and Wahlberg.
When Will the ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff Premiere on CBS?
The network announced in February 2025 that Boston Blue was ordered straight to series for the 2025-2026 broadcast season. It joins returning shows Tracker, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, Hollywood Squares, Elsbeth, Fire Country, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, Ghosts, NCIS: Sydney and Matlock.
Boston Blue is one of CBS’ new shows in addition to Fire Country‘s Sheriff Country spinoff and The Road.
Will Characters From ‘Blue Bloods’ Make Cameos?
Wahlberg is the only confirmed Blue Bloods cast member — for now. The Blue Bloods cast has unanimously shown their support for more seasons of the show or potential appearances on the CBS spinoff.
“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue!” Wahlberg wrote via Instagram in March 2025. “The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall! 💙❤️🫡🙏🏼.”
Did Donnie Wahlberg Previously Tease Spinoff Ideas?
“I would say I would have Danny Reagan walk right into his next chapter of his life, maybe in a different place doing a similar job and perhaps with someone from the current cast,” he told Entertainment Weekly in December 2024. “But I want him to not be too far from the family so that he could still see them and spend time with them, but maybe to see what life has in store for him now that his boys have gone off and he’s empty nesting and his wife’s gone. Maybe he can see what the future holds for him on his own. As long as he can visit the family sometimes. Does that sound like a tease for a spinoff?”
Where Did ‘Blue Bloods’ Leave Off?
Frank (Selleck) remained the police commissioner of New York City while Erin (Bridget Moynahan) decided to remarry Jack (Peter Hermann). The last family dinner ended with a fun surprise when Eddie (Vanessa Ray) confirmed she was expecting her first baby with Jamie (Will Estes).
