A former University of Michigan football player claims ex head coach Sherrone Moore’s affair with a staff member was used as “blackmail” for playing time.
“I was treated unfairly due to Sherrone Moore being blackmailed by players and staff members, which jeopardized my opportunity to get on the field,” former Michigan wide receiver Anthony Simpson wrote in a since-deleted post via X, according to WDIV Local 4 in Detroit.
He continued, “Fastest player on the team and I won reps everyday in practice. Only there for fall camp. Our team captains also advocated for me to play. I was denied fairness.”
Simpson transferred to Michigan last offseason after playing two seasons at the University of Arizona and two seasons at the University of Massachusetts.
The wide receiver only had one carry for 10 yards all of last season, which came against Central Michigan on September 13, 2025.
Simpson entered the transfer portal on January 16, sharing via X, “Thank you god for it all 🙏🏾 I know you have a plan for me! True hard worker who needs an explosive playmaker? slot & outside and I run every route in the tree 💯.”
It was announced that Simpson transferred to the University of Toledo on Tuesday, January 20.
“Extremely blessed thank you God for it all let’s work 🙏🏾❤️,” he wrote via X after the announcement.
Former Michigan wide receiver Semaj Morgan, who transferred to UCLA earlier this month, seemingly disputed Simpson’s allegation in the comments.
“Y’all let people tell y’all anything and believe it,” Morgan wrote, according to WDIV.

Moore, 39, was fired as head football coach on December 10, after a university investigation uncovered a years-long affair with a female staff member.
In Moore’s termination letter, University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said Moore “provided untruthful statements during investigative interviews regarding the matter.”
Just hours after being fired, Moore allegedly broke into the apartment of the staff member and threatened to harm her and himself.
Moore was charged with one count of third-degree felony home invasion, one count misdemeanor stalking related to a domestic relationship and one count misdemeanor breaking and entering on December 12.
He was released on $25,000 bond and ordered to wear a GPS tracking device. He was additionally instructed to cease all contact with the staff member.
Moore is scheduled to appear in court for his next hearing on Thursday, January 22.
The University of Michigan hired Kyle Whittingham as their new head football coach on December 26, 2025.
