As the celebrity lookalike contests continue around the world, Glen Powell has impressed fans by awarding the winner of his unofficial event a prize he estimated is worth “a cash value of $6 billion.”
On Sunday, hundreds of fans turned up at Auditorium Shores, a park in downtown Austin, Texas—Powell’s hometown—to crown the competition’s winner. Also in attendance were Powell’s mother and aunt, who helped select the winner, with those in the crowd cheering for who they thought should win.
As Powell is filming Edgar Wright’s next adaptation of The Running Man in England, he could not be there in person. However, he shocked the crowd when he FaceTimed into the event, promising the winner a cameo in his next movie.
Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Powell for comment on Monday outside of normal business hours.
The video of Powell talking to attendees was posted to the entertainment X (formerly Twitter) account Pop Crave. At the time of writing, it had been viewed 799,500 times.
At the beginning of the clip, Powell joked that he had assembled attendees to pull off a heist: “And we don’t need masks because we all have the same face, it’s the perfect crime. They can’t get all of us because we are one—a criminal Glen-terprise. Also, I know it’s November, but if no one is shirtless for no reason, then this whole thing is a sham and, obviously, no one is committed to the bit.”
The actor continued: “I know there is some cash and a hat at stake here, but I just wanted to say that the winner of today’s contest gets a personal prize from me. Now, you may know that my parents make a cameo in every movie I make, but today, the winner of the Glen Powell lookalike contest wins their parents or any family member of their choice a cameo in my next movie. I am completely serious. This is a cash-value prize of $6 billion.
“Take a pic together for me, enjoy my favorite city in the world, keep Austin weird, hook ’em Horns and see ya around, every time I look in the mirror.”
According to Fox 7 Austin, contestant number 4—physician assistant Maxwell Braunstein—took home the win. As well as the cameo, his prize included a cowboy hat, free Torchy’s queso for a year and a cash prize.
“My face hasn’t hurt like this since I was 10 and at Disney World,” he said, before explaining he’s previously been told he looks like the Hollywood star.
“I did tell people I was going to win. I did mention that to my friends that sent it to me.”
This isn’t the first celebrity lookalike competition that has taken the internet by storm. This trend all started when event organizers were on the hunt for a Timothée Chalamet lookalike in New York—and the actor shocked fans by making an appearance.
The event had been advertised on flyers around the city and hosted by YouTuber Anthony Po, who has held a variety of look-alike competitions in the past. On the flyer, he promised $50 to the winner.
On the day, contestants were asked questions about Kylie Jenner, who is said to be dating the Call Me By Your Name actor, and they were tested on their French proficiency as Chalamet is both American and French. They were also asked how they would make the world a better place.
No one could have expected that Chalamet would turn up at the event, which he did with bodyguards in tow. The magazine Variety said that Chalamet sneaked his way through the crowd by wearing a mask and baseball hat. Once he revealed himself, he posed for photos with fans and some of his lookalikes.
Since then, some of the other lookalike contests that have taken place are a Jeremy Allen White event in Chicago, a hunt for a Paul Mescal lookalike in Dublin and a search for a Dev Patel lookalike in San Francisco.
