Season 2 of Maxton Hall got off to a very rough start when James cheated on Ruby just days after they finally got together.
During the Thursday, November 6, premiere, James (Damian Hardung) found out his mother had died and ran straight to Ruby’s (Harriet Herbig-Matten) house. He left before she saw him after seeing how happy she was with her family. James then went on a drunken bender, which Ruby didn’t know about until later.
Ruby thought James went missing and joined his sister, Lydia (Sonja Weißer), to track him down. They ultimately ended up at a house party where James was drinking and dancing with other women. Once he saw Ruby, he went into the pool where a random girl joined him — and they made out in front of his girlfriend.
Season 2, which will air episodes weekly, is based on the second part of Mona Kasten‘s Save You novel. According to the synopsis, Maxton Hall picks up after James and Ruby’s “passionate night together in Oxford and her greatest life goal within reach, everything seems to be going perfectly for Ruby.”
Things take a turn, however, when “a stroke of fate in James’ family changes everything and James himself, of all people, brings her back from cloud nine to a harsh reality. Ruby is devastated. She has never had such strong feelings for anyone as she does for James — and never before has anyone hurt her so deeply.”
The logline continues: “She wants her old life back, where no one at Maxton Hall knew her yet and she wasn’t part of the elitist world of her classmates. But she can’t forget James — especially since he’s doing everything he can to win her back.”
In addition to Hardung, 26, and Herbig-Matten, 21, Weißer, Ben Felipe, Fedja van Huêt, Runa Greiner, Justus Riesner, Andrea Guo, Frederic Balonier and Eli Riccardi return for the second season. Director Martin Schreier also came back to direct Maxton Hall — The World Between Us.
The German-language TV drama premiered in May 2024 and introduced viewers to an unlikely enemies-to-lovers romance between private school classmates Ruby and James. While attending their prestigious U.K. school, scholarship recipient Ruby unwittingly witnessed a secret that put her on the radar of the wealthy James.
Maxton Hall quickly found record-breaking success, becoming the most-watched non-U.S. title during its first week on Prime Video. The series was renewed for a second season immediately after its debut, and production started in June 2024. Prime Video has since renewed the show for a third season as well.
Herbig-Matten weighed in on the surprising success of Maxton Hall worldwide, exclusively telling Us Weekly in June 2024, “It is really surprising. We never expected that. We always thought, ‘Hopefully it’s gonna work in Germany.’ So it’s, like, a huge surprise. It’s so international and I’m really overwhelmed, but I’m really happy and proud that people love it.”
She continued: “And I think it’s not only a success for us, but also for the German industry. A project can be international and can [find its audience] internationally.”
Maxton Hall airs on Prime Video Thursdays.
