The Chattanooga Mocs finished first in the Southern Conference with an overall record of 28-9 (15-3 in conference). They are led by Honor Huff (15.2 ppg), Trey Bonham (14.5 ppg), and Bash Wieland (14.1 ppg), a trio of upperclass scoring guards. In the semifinals of the NIT, Chattanooga defeated Loyola Chicago 80-73, overcoming a four-point halftime deficit in the process. The trio combined to score 47 points, led by Bonham’s 23.
UC Irvine went 32-6 on the season under head coach Russ Turner, finishing second in the Big West Conference with a 17-3 record. In sharp contrast to Chattanooga, the Anteaters are led by a duo of senior bigs, with 7-foot center Bent Leuchten leading the team with 15.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, pairing with senior forward Devin Tillis, who’s averaged 13.5 points and 7.8 rebounds. UC Irvine escaped the semifinals narrowly, defeating North Texas 69-67.
