The second leg of the quarterfinal matchup between Cruz Azul and Club Tijuana will take place on Saturday night as Cruz Azul takes on Club Tijuana looking to mount what would be a historic comeback.
After dominating the Liga MX campaign, finishing first on the table in the Apertura season by a full seven points with a 13-3-1 record, Cruz Azul is now staring a quarterfinal exit in the face as the club fell 3-0 to Club Tijuana in the first leg of their two-game series. Considering Cruz Azul’s history of disappointing relative to expectations, the club will be desperate to buck that narrative on Saturday and pull off the comeback against Club Tijuana.

Scoring in the opening leg for Club Tijuana were Jose Raul Zuniga Murillo, Efrain Alvarez, and Emanuel Reynoso, who all scored in the first half. Making matters worse for Cruz Azul is the fact that Jorge Sanchez got a red card in the 34th minute, leaving him suspended for the second leg on Saturday night.
Club Tijuana finished seventh in the Apertura season and needed to defeat Atlas on Nov. 24 to even get a shot at Cruz Azul in the playoffs. That’s because Tijuana fell to Club America in penalties with a playoff spot on the line in their matchup before that. Regardless, Club Tijuana was able to defeat Atlas 3-0 to get to this spot thanks to goals scored by Murillo and Kevin Castañeda.
