Two months ago, John Cena said goodbye to the pro wrestling world and to active competition in the WWE when he tapped out to Gunther at “Saturday Night’s Main Event” in Washington, D.C.
Tonight at Disruptive Women’s Pro Wrestling, the legend made his return to the wrestling ring.
Well, kinda.

Produced by AEW superstar and European independent wrestling legend Will Ospreay, the show featured a spoof of a Royal Rumble, with John Cena’s iconic music hitting.
As the fans in the venue go crazy, the camera pans to the entrance, which is open, with no one standing there. The commentators continue to play up the fact that John Cena has arrived and is about to wrestle, as the competitors in the ring react to the man who famously can’t be seen.
“John Cena” proceeds to clear wrestlers from the ring as the real Cena probably sits at home none the wiser.
In three hours, the clip has already been seen over 1 million times.
Ospreay, who is currently dealing with a neck injury and recently had surgery on it, is set to return to action soon for Tony Khan’s AEW.
For Cena, who has dealt with no one seeing him joke for now upwards of two decades, he remains steadfast in his promise not to wrestle again.
Although he is signed to an ambassador deal and has reaffirmed he will return to the WWE ring, Cena has also said that his match with Gunther would be his last. While Cena believes he can still go for many years in the ring with a part-time schedule, the 17-time world champion wanted to leave the business with his body still intact.
But this is the world of pro wrestling, where a tease of a return or any hint can send fans down a rabbit hole of theories.
While this was the first time, post-retirement, a pro wrestling company used Cena’s return to spark interest in its product, it certainly won’t be the last. And that includes the WWE.
