Maternity hospitals in Perth have been put on alert and police are investigating after the body of an infant child was found in a stormwater drain in the city’s north on Monday.
Officers were called to La Salle Road in Alexander Heights about 1pm to reports the child’s body had been found.
“Multiple resources have been deployed to the location and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is currently under way,” a WA Police spokesman said.
9News Perth reported the child was a newborn. Ambulance crews were also called out to the street, but were soon stood down.
Police have also put out an alert to maternity hospitals across the city, with concerns held for the infant’s mother.
It is understood tradesmen made the discovery while carrying out maintenance works in the area.
Major crime detectives remained at the scene into Monday afternoon, with a section of road that backed onto bushland cordoned off.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact police immediately on 131 444.
