A January 6 activist has expressed support for President Donald Trump being removed from office via the 25th Amendment.
“He is insane,” Trisha Hope, a former diehard Trump supporter who has campaigned on behalf of those who were convicted of their actions at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, wrote on X in response to the president’s claim on Monday that he has not lost any of his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) supporters.
“He has absolutely lost me, in fact I’m eyeing the 25th amendment for him because he’s lost his damn mind.”
Newsweek has contacted Hope and the White House for comment via emails sent outside regular business hours.
Why It Matters
Trump has faced condemnation and calls to be removed from office, including from some of his MAGA supporters, amid his threats to eradicate “civilization” with massive strikes against Iran. He pulled back on those threats late Tuesday, as the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
Critics called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked over his threats and social media posts. The amendment would allow the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to remove the president from office. The mechanism has never been used to remove a president from office.
What To Know
In her post on X, Hope called herself “as MAGA as they get.”
She wrote that she had attended 42 rallies, as well as become a state and national delegate “ALL TO SUPPORT TRUMP.”
Her post came in response to a clip of comments the president made on Monday, where he said MAGA “loves” what he is doing.
“Everyone’s saying, ‘Oh, is Trump losing MAGA?’ No, I’m not losing MAGA. MAGA loves what I’m doing,” he said.
In his remarks, Trump referred to an NBC News poll from March where every self-identified MAGA Republican said they approved of Trump. The results of the poll were discussed on CNN at the time, with the network’s data analyst Harry Enten saying they show that “if you are a member of MAGA, you approve of Donald Trump.”
A recent poll from YouGov and The Economist found a majority of MAGA Republicans continue to support the war with Iran, while most non-MAGA Republicans oppose it.
A recent CNN poll found that 32 percent of MAGA Republicans opposed putting troops on the ground in Iran while 25 percent favor it. The survey found a majority of non-MAGA Republicans (56 percent) also oppose ground troops, while 20 percent favor them.
What People Are Saying
A White House spokesperson previously told Newsweek in a statement: “President Trump campaigned proudly on his promise to deny the Iranian regime the ability to develop a nuclear weapon, which is what this noble operation is seeking to accomplish. The President does not make these incredibly important national security decisions based on fluid opinion polls, but on the best interest of the American people.”
Conservative political commentator and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones said on his Infowars podcast this week: “How do we 25th Amendment his ass?”
Former GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X: “25TH AMENDMENT!!! Not a single bomb has dropped on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness.”
Senator Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said in a statement posted on X: “With each passing day, it becomes increasingly apparent that Donald Trump is unstable and a clear and present danger, not just to the American people but to the world. He must be removed from office before he causes incalculable and unfathomable harm.”
Representative Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, wrote on X: “We need to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump. Threatening war crimes is a blatant violation of our constitution and the Geneva Conventions.”
What Happens Next
Without Vice President JD Vance and a majority of the Cabinet losing confidence in the president, it remains unlikely the 25th Amendment will be invoked.
