Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau keeps his love life mostly private, but his marriage to ex-wife Sophie Grégoire unfolded in front of the world.
Grégoire and Trudeau first met as children growing up in Montreal, as Grégoire was a classmate and friend of Trudeau’s youngest brother, Michel. However, it wasn’t until years later, when the Closer Together author and politician were both adults in 2003, that they reconnected at a charity event.
Grégoire and Justin began dating and got engaged after one year together. They tied the knot in May 2005 and welcomed three kids.
In August 2023, Justin announced that he and Grégoire were separating after 18 years of marriage.
Following their split, Grégoire moved on with Ottawa surgeon Marcos Bettolli. Meanwhile, Justin sparked was spotted out with Katy Perry in July 2025.

Justin Trudeau Was Married to TV Host Sophie Gregoire
Justin’s only confirmed relationship was with Grégoire. The pair began dating in 2003 after Grégoire was assigned as Justin’s cohost at a charity event in Montreal. He was an engineering student at École Polytechnique at the time.
Justin and Grégoire got engaged on October 18, 2004, and tied the knot on May 28, 2005, at the Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church in Montreal.
Before their split in 2023, the former couple welcomed son Xavier in October 2007, daughter Ella-Grace in February 2009 and son Hadrien in February 2014.
Justin shared a statement announcing his separation from Grégoire via Instagram.
“Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” the statement read. “As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.”
The post concluded, “For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”
Months later, Grégoire reflected on their split during an appearance on Katie Couric’s “Next Question” podcast.
“It hurts deeply, because in a way we have these two words in our language. You know, marriage is ‘success.’ Separation and divorce is ‘failure,’” she said. “But life happens in between. And we dramatize our relationships because we are insecure, we are afraid to be abandoned, we are afraid to be alone as human beings. It is not in our nature to be alone and just living alone.”
Grégoire reassured listeners that she and Justin are still on good terms.
“We are still bound by love and respect and smiles and tears, and we’re still trying to figure it out. And it’s not perfect, but when you keep things honest, Michael J. Fox said, ‘We’re only as sick as our secrets,’” she said.
Justin Trudeau Spotted Having Dinner With Katy Perry
Justin was seen having dinner with the “Fireworks” singer at a table inside restaurant Le Violon in Montreal in July 2025. At one point, Perry rested her face on her hands as she listened to Justin speak, as seen in footage obtained by TMZ.
Prior to their dinner, the pair was spotted taking a walk in Montreal’s Mount Royal Park. Perry held her dog while she spoke to Justin, as seen in photos published by the outlet.
