A woman who went viral for snatching Patrick Mahomes’ game-worn headband from a young fan is hoping to make things right.
Nina Miller, nicknamed “Kansas City Karen,” caused outrage when she was caught on video stealing Mahomes’ headband from 10-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan Joey Masters after the Chiefs defeated the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on September 21.
“I shouldn’t have done what I done,” Miller said Tuesday, September 30, on Inside Edition. “I didn’t plan on doing that and I didn’t know I did it.”
Miller was given the opportunity to apologize to the young fan via a video call.
“I’m sorry, honey,” Miller said. “I really am. I swear. Maybe you don’t believe me. But I’m sorry, baby.”
Masters smiled and responded, “I believe you, thanks.”
Miller said she had been “crying for the past two days” since the video of the headband-snatching went viral, and promised to send the headband to Joey.
“Thank you for sending it back,” the young boy said. “That would be amazing.”
Miller, who is a Giants fan, was singing a different tune during her TV appearance than she was just days before on social media.
“I did not steal a headband from a little kid,” Miller said in a TikTok video posted on Sunday, September 28. “I just need to explain myself because everyone’s having heart failure over this. You need to understand, I’m at a football game. Last two minutes of the game, I allowed many people to come and sit down next to me.”
Miller insisted she “paid for our tickets” near the field and suggested fans were coming from “the nosebleeds” to get closer to the players after the game.
“I am not a thief,” Miller said defiantly. “That little boy, when Mahomes came, if you look at the video, both of our hands was on [the headband]. He was right to the left of me. I didn’t look in Mahomes’ eyes to see where he was looking. I just seen he’s handing out something, I put out my hand. Both of our hands was on it. I took it.”
Miller continued, “If he was 20 years old, would it have mattered?”
Masters, who received tickets to the game as a 10th birthday gift, attempted to explain his side of the story during a separate interview.
“Patrick Mahomes walked over to me, locked eyes with me, tries to give me his headband and the woman just swoops in and snatches it from me,” the young fan told KCTV on Monday, September 29.
The boy’s mother, Mindy, said it had been “a great day” until the now-viral incident went down.
“The players were amazing with us, the fans were, and just to have one person swoop in and take that from him is heartbreaking for a mother to watch,” she told KCTV.
Mindy added, “I don’t want her to get hate mail, don’t want her to get death threats. Just give the child his headband back.”
