A kitten and puppy who were adopted just one week apart are proving that friendship can come in all shapes and sizes.
Having grown up around cats, Lauren Lagasse was so excited to break the mold and get her own puppy, a mini long-haired dachshund named Callie Ren. She was due to bring Callie home on September 30, when she was finally old enough to be separated from her mother. But just one week prior, Lagasse couldn’t resist helping another animal in need.
On September 23, Lagasse came across Cassie Gray, a kitten who was up for adoption at the Central Florida SPCA. There was a kitten yoga event in Lakeland, Florida, and Lagasse simply couldn’t say no after meeting Cassie.
Although she had her reservations about adopting a kitten and a puppy simultaneously, Lagasse, 20, tells Newsweek that they’re “the perfect mix of cuteness and chaos.” The duo instantly hit it off, and now they are inseparable.
“They will go from playing and play fighting together one minute, to cuddling the next,” Lagasse said. “Cassie loves to try and eat Callie’s food, and Callie willingly shares even though they both know it’s not allowed. At night, they both sleep in bed with me, usually cuddling each other in my arms.”
She continued: “I was so worried they wouldn’t like each other or that Cassie would be mad at me for bringing the puppy home. But I was so relieved when they started to play and cuddle together. And since they entertain and tire each other out, it’s less work on me.”
Every time Lagasse sees the pair together, it warms her heart, and she knows she made the right decision.
Cassie and Callie spend almost every moment together, and they’re usually only apart when Lagasse takes Callie out. They have the same feeding schedule, sleep pattern, and of course, the same playtime routine. “They are literally attached at the hip,” Lagasse said.
She shared an adorable post on TikTok (@lauren.lagasse) showing just how close the kitten and puppy have become. The photos show them cuddling side by side and even snoozing on top of each other. The one constant in every photo is that Cassie and Callie are always touching, whether it’s their paws, their tails, or full on cuddling up to one another.
Internet users can’t get enough of their cuteness, leading to more than 944,900 views and over 221,100 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
“Every time I see them together, my heart feels so full. Having a sister myself, I know what a special bond it is to grow up with somebody and I just can’t wait to see how their bond grows,” Lagasse told Newsweek.
“Seeing how many people love them has been so overwhelming in the best way. There have been people telling me I’m brave or wishing me luck. From the outside, I’m sure it seems crazy (all my friends asked me what the heck I thought I was doing getting a kitten right before the puppy) but I wouldn’t want it any other way,” she said.
The duo’s unlikely friendship has melted plenty of hearts, as social media users took to the comments to praise their undeniable closeness. This has led to more than 580 comments on the viral TikTok post so far.
One comment reads: “Chaos but major cuteness.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “oh my god the cuddle puddle I CANNOT.”
Another person replied: “aw they’re lil besties.”
While one commenter joked: “do you think the cat’s gonna be confused when they’re not the same size anymore?”
