Early on Saturday afternoon, the queue to vote at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School in Southbank, in the seat of Macnamara, was wrapping around the block.
Voters in the queue were told it could be up to a two-hour wait to cast their vote.
University students Sophia and Alex said they had been queuing for 30 minutes, but were keeping positive. “At least it’s a nice day … If it was raining we’d be annoyed,” Alex said.
Another trio closer to the front of the line said they had been waiting for about 75 minutes.
“Some drinks would be nice … or a hat for me to put on,” said one of the voters, motioning to his empty drink bottle and bare bald head.
On Saturday morning, those who arrived at The District shopping centre in Docklands, immediately west of Melbourne’s CBD, were told they would have to stand in line for at least 90 minutes.
